The scary season is nearly here! Despite Halloween never taking off properly in Australia the way it does in the US, it’s always been an awesome excuse to grab all the chocolate and lollies from the supermarket to hand out to cute little children dressed in various superhero/fairy/ghost costumes. Those that didn’t believe in Halloween and could not be bothered to get chocolate often suffered the toilet paper ‘trick’. For those a little too old for chocolate and lollies, there was always another way to celebrate Halloween.
Once upon a time…
It was Monday 31st October. A lone woman dressed in black jeans and a black t-shirt glanced down at the red invitation in her hand. “Visit….if you dare” was printed at the top. She turned it over and on the back were the words in gold cursive writing, “Madame Tussauds Sydney” along with the address. Tucking the invitation back into her pocket, she shivered as a light breeze twisted around her ruffling her brown hair. With a sense of trepidation, she treaded lightly onto the red carpet marking the entrance. There were cobwebs and little pumpkins decorating the gold bollards that lined the red carpet.
She turned the corner and nearly had a heart attack.
To her left, staring down at her dressed in a suit with glasses perched on his nose was Johnny Depp. To her right was Captain Jack Sparrow with blood smeared on his cheeks. Looking from one figure to another, she was confused. Were they both wax figures? Were they both real? A moment later, Captain Jack Sparrow reached around Johnny Depp and proffered a beer. She jumped in surprise. A moment later she took the beer gratefully with a smile at the stunt.
Ghosts, vampires and other scary characters wandered around, cocktails in hand.
She stared in wonder at the Halloween themed cocktail party unfolding in front of her for a few moments. Hurriedly, she reached back into her pocket for the invitation. At the bottom under the image of a dancing ghost, there were the words “Come dressed in your scariest attire.” She sighed. She forgot the dress code!
